Sharing your background for your website's About section

For a knowledge-based or consulting business, what makes someone buy often isn't just the service — it's you. Your website can only say why you're qualified if you tell me, so I can put it in your About section (what some call the "why buy from me" section).

How it works

Just tell me directly — "here's my LinkedIn: ...", "I'm a CPA with 12 years of experience", "I used to run operations at a mid-size firm before starting this" — and I'll record it and use it the next time I build or update your site's About section. You can share your LinkedIn profile URL, a short written background, or both.

If your business looks like a consulting or professional-services type, I ask you for this once, early on, while we're getting set up. It's one short question and it never holds anything up — I keep working on your website either way — and I'll put your background into your About section as soon as you answer. You only need to answer once: after that I won't keep asking.

Saying no is a complete answer

You never have to share any of this. If you'd rather not, just tell me — "I'd rather not", "skip it", "no thanks" — and I'll remember that. I won't ask again on a later day, and I won't ask again in different words. If you change your mind, tell me any time and I'll take it then.

Your website still turns out fine. If you haven't shared anything about yourself — whether you said no or I simply never got round to asking — I write that part of the page about the business instead: what it does, who it's for, how it works. I will never make up qualifications, years of experience, or credentials you didn't give me, and I won't leave an empty "about me" heading sitting on your page. That holds on every build, not just the ones where we've talked about it.

What I do with it

I use exactly what you tell me — I don't invent credentials or embellish your background. Your LinkedIn URL, if you give me one, may also be linked from your About section so visitors can look you up directly.

Once you've told me, I keep it. Later rebuilds and revisions of your site reuse what's already on file, so I don't have to interrogate you again every time your site changes, and an unrelated tweak to your site won't quietly drop your About section.

If you've written a lot about yourself, I may use a shortened version on the page itself — I keep everything you told me, but a web page's About section reads better as a few tight paragraphs than as a full CV.

Changing or clearing it

Tell me any time and I'll update it — add a detail I didn't have, correct something, or clear it out entirely. Whatever's on file is what shows up the next time your site's About section is written or refreshed; it doesn't retroactively rewrite a page that's already live until you ask for that update. See "Asking for changes to your website".

Today, this is text only

Right now I can only take a LinkedIn link and text you type or paste — I can't yet accept an uploaded résumé or document. If that would help you, let me know; it's something we're considering adding.
