Sending email from your own domain

Once you've connected a domain you already own, you can send your business email from it too. Customers see hello@yourbusiness.com instead of the address you started with.

You'll find this under Settings → Domain, in the same domain box you used for your website — tick Email alongside Website and press Connect. If your website isn't on your own domain yet, tick Email on its own; one domain, and you pick what it's for.

The first thing most people want to know

If you already have email at that domain, this will not touch it.

Before anything changes, we look up what your domain does today. If there's already email there — a Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 mailbox, or just a newsletter tool that sends as your domain — we leave it alone and set ours up alongside it. You don't have to tell us.

The two ways it can go

That lookup decides which one you get, not a question we ask you.

Your domain doesn't do email yet. We use the domain itself. Your address becomes hello@yourbusiness.com, and mail customers send there arrives in your Velo inbox alongside everything else.

Your domain already does email. We use mail.yourbusiness.com instead. Your address becomes hello@mail.yourbusiness.com, we add nothing at your main domain, and your existing mailbox keeps working as it does now. Replies come to your Velo inbox either way.

The panel tells you which one you're in before you add anything.

Adding the records

Same shape as the website records: a short list, each with a copy button, added at the company you bought the domain from. The list tucks away once your records check out — click the heading to reopen it.

  • One that lets us send as your domain — skipped if you already have one.
  • Two that sign your mail so it isn't treated as spam.
  • One that proves the domain is yours. It drops off the list once that's confirmed.
  • If your domain doesn't do email yet, two more that let mail sent to your address reach you here — add both, they work as a pair.

Add them exactly as given, including trailing dots, at the exact name shown beside each one — the right value under the wrong name does nothing. A priority matters too; most domain companies have a separate box for it.

While you're waiting

Nothing breaks meanwhile — mail keeps going out from your Velo address until the records check out. The panel shows which address is in use.

Records usually take minutes, occasionally up to 48 hours — we keep checking, nothing to press. If it's not through after a week I'll check in; after two weeks I stop trying rather than leave it "waiting" forever, and you can start again any time.

When it's not going through

  • A placeholder record from your domain company is still in the way. Delete it.
  • A record was shortened, renamed, or skipped — compare it to what we gave you, character by character.
  • Records went on a different domain than the one you set up — common if you own several.
  • They're all there, but on the wrong name. If we set you up under mail.yourbusiness.com, that's where the records go — putting them on your main domain looks right but is invisible to us, since most guides assume your main domain. Copy the name from the panel, not just the value.
  • The record proving the domain is yours is missing. Everything else can look perfect and mail still won't go out.
  • A record came back with your own domain tacked onto the end. Some domain companies need a trailing dot on that kind of value, or they'll append your domain themselves.
  • It genuinely hasn't propagated yet and it's been under 48 hours.

Newsletters and campaigns stay on your Velo address for now

Your everyday email switches over as soon as the domain is ready. Newsletters and campaigns keep going out from your Velo address: they go through a different mail system behind the scenes, which has to verify your domain separately. We'll say here when that changes.

Turning it off

You can stop using your domain for email at any time from the same panel. Your email goes back to your Velo address from the very next message, and your website keeps the domain either way. Set it up again whenever you like — your DNS records usually still work if you left them in place, but we re-check the domain from scratch, so you may be asked to publish the ownership record again even when nothing else changed.

What isn't covered yet

  • Reading your existing mailbox here. We bring your business email into your Velo inbox; we're not a replacement for a mailbox you already have elsewhere.
  • More than one address. One business address per domain for now — no separate sales@ and support@.
  • More than one domain. One per business for now.
